In the week of International #WomensDay and within the course “The Neapolitan Woman in film and literature”, we are pleased to present the webinar “Neapolitan Women Writers from Matilde Serao to Elena Ferrante” (March 28th, 11 am ET), led by Dr. Lee Foust. An introduction to the lives and major works of three female writers who shaped the Neapolitan literary scene of the last three centuries: Matilde Serao, co-founder of Naples’ daily newspaper #IlMattino and her masterful 1891 novel of the of the Neapolitan lottery “The Land of Cockayne”; Anna Maria Ortese whose “Il mare non bagna Napoli” (Neapolitan Chronicles) reshaped and criticized the post #WWII literary scene and whose later novels “Il porto di Toledo” and “The Lament of the Linnet” offer imaginary and historical glimpses of the city; and lastly contemporary Neapolitan superstar Elena Ferrante whose “My Brilliant Friend” series has, since the 1990s, brought the Neapolitan experience to the world not only on the page but in film and television as well.
