Georgetown University and the Sant’Anna Institute are pleased to announce “‘The wonder of Italy’: Torquato Tasso’s Legacy in International Culture”, a two-day international conference on Torquato Tasso’s national and international legacies in literature, music, theater, film and radio, and the visual arts, from the Renaissance to the present day. The conference will take place at the Sant’Anna Institute, Sorrento, on May 30 – 31, 2025.
Potential topics for twenty-minute presentations include, but are not limited to:
- Interpretations of Tasso’s works in music (both vocal and instrumental genres);
- Pictorial representations of Tasso and his works in the fine arts;
- Tasso’s biographers and the making of Tasso’s legend;
- Tasso as a character in the works of Leopardi, Goethe, Bryon, and others;
- Tasso’s influence on national and international literatures;
- Tasso’s presence in the United States and in other national cultures;
- Radio and film renditions of Tasso’s works;
- Translations of Tasso’s works in different languages and dialects;
- The influence of Tasso’s literary theory;
- The impact of Tasso’s works on gender representation, philosophy, psychoanalysis, theology, and political theory.
We welcome proposals for a paper, in English or Italian (250-word abstract, plus 100-word biographical note), on any of these or related topics by January 15, 2025.
